Lena and the Little Sprouts

In a sun-dappled valley, where the river sparkled like a ribbon of silver, lived a little girl named Lena. Lena loved to play among the tall sunflowers and chase butterflies with wings like painted jewels. But more than anything, Lena loved the berry patch. It wasn't just any berry patch; it was *her* berry patch, a gift from her grandmother, who taught her all about the earth and its secrets. "To grow things, Lena," Grandma would say, "you must have patience, a gentle hand, and a promise to the earth."

Lena spent her mornings tending her tiny plot. She'd talk to the little berry sprouts, whispering encouragement, and carefully pull out any stray weeds. Her hands, though small, were surprisingly strong and knew just how much water each plant needed. She dreamed of the day her berries would be big and juicy, enough to share with everyone in the village, especially her grandmother.

A Shadow in the Bushes

One warm afternoon, as Lena hummed a little song to her budding plants, a shadow fell over her patch. Lena looked up, her eyes wide. Peeking out from behind the thickest berry bush was a pair of bright, curious eyes. They belonged to a young wolf, no bigger than Lena's own dog, but much shyer. He looked thin, and his fur was a little matted. He watched Lena with an intense gaze, his nose twitching, clearly drawn by the sweet scent of the almost-ripe berries.

Lena wasn't scared. Her grandmother had taught her that all creatures had a place in the valley. "Hello," she whispered, holding very still. The wolf blinked, then took a tiny step forward. He looked at the berries, then back at Lena, a little whine escaping his throat. Lena understood. He was hungry. She knew her berries weren't quite ready, but she also knew what it felt like to be hungry, even for a little while.

"These are still growing," Lena explained softly, pointing to the green berries. "But if you're patient, like me, there will be plenty soon. Enough for both of us." The wolf tilted his head, as if understanding every word. Lena then remembered something. She always carried a small pouch of dried apples in her pocket, a snack her grandmother packed for her. She carefully pulled one out and placed it gently on the ground, a little distance from herself. "Here," she said, "a promise of what's to come."

The Harvest Share

The wolf sniffed the dried apple cautiously, then gobbled it down in two quick bites. He looked at Lena again, his tail giving a tiny, almost imperceptible wag. From that day on, the wolf would sometimes appear at the edge of the berry patch, watching Lena work. He never tried to eat the unripe berries. He just watched, patiently, as the green berries slowly turned red, then a deep, inviting purple.

Finally, the day arrived! The berry patch was bursting with ripe, plump berries. Lena's heart swelled with joy. She carefully picked the biggest, juiciest ones, filling her basket. As she worked, she heard a soft rustle. The young wolf was there, his eyes bright with anticipation. Lena smiled. She remembered her promise. She filled a small leaf with a generous pile of her best berries and placed it on the ground for him.

The wolf approached, sniffed the sweet offering, and then, with a grateful look at Lena, began to eat. Lena watched him, then continued picking, knowing there was more than enough for her grandmother, for her village, and for the patient wolf who had understood the true meaning of a promise and the reward of waiting.
