Once upon a time, there lived an old man and his wife. They were poor and made a living by setting traps. One day, when the old man came to check his trap, he found a goose caught in it. As he was about to kill the goose, it spoke to him: "Release me! If you let me go, I will grant you one wish a year from now," it said. The old man thought this was a good deal and freed the goose. When he returned home and told his wife, she scolded him. The old man replied, "You don't understand anything!" and ignored her. A year passed, and the old man decided to visit the goose. On his way, he came across a herd of camels grazing. He asked the herder, "Whose camels are these?" "They belong to Kazbai," the herder replied. The old man thought to himself, "This Kazbai must be the goose." He continued on and soon encountered a shepherd. "Whose sheep are these?" he asked. "They belong to Kazbai," the shepherd answered. The old man then asked the shepherd boy, "Tell me, does Kazbai have anything else?" The boy replied, "Kazbai has three wonderful things. One is a pot that when you say, 'Cook, my pot, cook!', it prepares various dishes. The second is a donkey that, when you say, 'Give me gold, my donkey!', it produces gold. And the third is a stick that, when you say, 'Hit, my stick, hit!', it hits people." "Alright," the old man said and continued on his way. He arrived at Kazbai's house, where he was warmly welcomed. The old man asked for the cooking pot, and Kazbai gave it to him. As the old man was returning home, he passed by some children playing and they called out to him, "Grandpa, come eat!" He joined them for a meal. As he was entering his house, he warned the children, "My dears, don’t say, 'Cook, my pot, cook!'" But as soon as he entered, the children shouted, "Cook, my pot, cook!" Suddenly, various dishes started cooking and were ready. The children took the pot and ran away with it. When the old man returned home and said, "Cook, my pot, cook!" nothing happened. Frustrated, he took the pot back to Kazbai. "Nothing came out of this pot," he said. Kazbai took the pot and said, "Cook, my pot, cook!" but nothing happened. Kazbai then gave the old man a donkey instead of the pot. The old man took the donkey home. On the way, the children called out, "Grandpa, come eat!" Reluctantly, the old man dismounted the donkey. As he entered his house, he warned the children, "My dears, don’t say, 'Give me gold, my donkey!'" The children replied, "Okay!" But as soon as he was inside, they shouted, "Give me gold, my donkey!" The donkey then produced gold. The children exchanged the donkey for another one. When the old man returned home, his wife asked, "Is this all you brought back from the goose?" The old man then said to the donkey, "Give me gold, my donkey!" but the donkey produced nothing. He took the donkey back to Kazbai. "The donkey doesn’t produce anything," he said. Kazbai took the donkey and said, "Give me gold, my donkey!" but again nothing happened. Kazbai then gave the old man the stick. As the old man walked back with the stick, he saw the same children again. They called out, "Grandpa, come eat!" As he entered, he told the children, "My dears, don’t say, 'Hit, my stick, hit!'" But as soon as he was inside, the excited children shouted, "Hit, my stick, hit!" The stick then started hitting each child one by one. The children cried out, "Oh no! Give us back your pot and your donkey!" Hearing this, the old man approached and asked, "Will you give back the pot and the donkey?" The children replied, "Sure! We’ll bring them to you!" The old man commanded the stick to stop hitting, and the children returned the pot and the donkey. With the pot, the donkey, and the stick in hand, the old man returned home and finally achieved his goal.
