The sun was warm. Birds sang "Chirp, chirp!" Bota scampered along the familiar path. "Squeak, squeak!" she chirped. She saw a big, juicy red berry just off the path. "Oh, a berry!"

Bota took one tiny step off the path. Then another. The berry looked even juicier! She forgot about Mama Squirrel's words. The trees looked a little different here. The ground felt softer. "Squish, squish!"

Bota squeezed her eyes shut. She wished she was back on the path. She heard the fox taking another step. "Pitter-patter!" Then, she remembered something else Mama Squirrel said. "If you ever get lost, Bota, stay still and listen for the forest sounds you know."

Bota opened her eyes just a little. She listened. Far away, she heard the familiar "Chirp, chirp!" of the birds near the path. She saw a tiny patch of sunlight, just like on the path. She took a deep breath. She knew what to do. Very, very slowly, Bota tiptoed back towards the sound. One tiny step. Another tiny step. The fox was still sniffing. "Sniff, sniff!"

Then, Bota felt the firm, familiar ground of the path under her paws. "Squeak, squeak!" she cried with relief. She ran and ran, all the way home. Mama Squirrel hugged her tight. Bota never forgot the lesson of the path and the big, scary fox. She always stayed on the path, safe and sound.
