As three travelers were walking, a man approached them and asked:

— Did you happen to see a wandering camel? One of the travelers replied:

— Is your camel's right eye blind? The man responded:

— Yes, he nodded. The second traveler asked:

 — Is your camel's right hind leg lame? The man answered:

 — That's right! His left hind leg is the one that limps,

he said. Then, the third traveler asked:

— Is your camel's tail short? The man replied:

 — Yes, it has a short tail,

he answered hurriedly and then asked,

— Where did you see that camel?

The travelers responded:

— We haven't seen it,

they said.

— If you haven't seen it, how do you know the marks of my camel? You stole my camel!

the man exclaimed. The travelers replied:

— Oh, dear, are you in your right mind? We haven't even seen your camel, let alone steal it,

they said. The man was not satisfied with this answer. The four of them went to a judge to seek his help. After some inquiry, the judge asked:

 — If you haven't stolen it or seen it, how do you know the exact marks of that camel as if you had seen it?

The travelers replied:

— We are not thieves; we are the children of herders who have grown up with livestock, that's why we know. We are not simpletons,

they replied.

— How do you know?

the judge asked again. The travelers explained:

— When we asked, "Is the camel's right eye blind?" we meant that the camel was eating the grass on the left side of the road while ignoring the grass on the right. We knew about the lameness of its leg because, when it stood still, the camel lifted its left hind leg. We knew its tail was short because when it defecated, it did so from a distance. A short-tailed camel can defecate far, but a long-tailed camel cannot throw its droppings far,

they said.
