Once upon a time, there lived a cat and a mouse who were very good friends. They shared everything they found and played together happily. At that time, humanity decided to gather animals to hold an election to mark the years of the zodiac, and all animals were required to participate in this election. On the day before the election, the sleepy cat thought, "I don't want to miss the election by sleeping in," and said to his clever friend the mouse:

– Brother, let's go to the election together tomorrow. You know how deep my sleep can be, so please make sure to wake me up early in the morning so we can go, – he said.

– Don't worry, big cat, even though I wake up before dawn, how can I go alone without waking you? – replied the mouse. However, that night, he was troubled by thoughts like, "If the number of participants increases, I might miss my chance to be selected," so the next morning he got up quietly and went to the election without waking the cat. During the election, the mouse was fortunate and was chosen as the first of the twelve zodiac animals. When the mouse returned, the cat was just getting up:

– When are we going to the election? – he asked.

– Are you still dreaming?! – replied the mouse. Laughing mockingly, he added, – The election has been over for a while, and not only did I get selected, but I also secured the first place.

– Why didn't you wake me up? – the cat asked, upset.

– I forgot, – replied the mouse.

The angry cat, puffing up its whiskers, said:

– You ungrateful, shameless creature! I’ll destroy your kind! – and leaped forward, grabbing the mouse and choking it to death, then ate it. However, even though the cat killed the mouse, it could not gain the status of a zodiac animal. Thus, to this day, whenever the cat sees a mouse, it pounces on it, crushing it and devouring it.
