Once upon a time, there was a cunning man named Aldar Kose. His profession was to deceive people. "Oh, grandfather, if I deceive, even if it's with demons and spirits, many professions exist, but if I make deception my craft," he said, seeking his grandfather's blessing. One day, Aldar Kose set out on a long journey with a demon. They traveled for days and nights. Eventually, both became exhausted. Then Aldar Kose said:
— "Let's not walk both at the same time; let's take turns riding." The demon agreed:
– "That's a good idea. Let's do that. But first, we need to agree on whose turn it is to ride." Aldar Kose then suggested:
– "In our Kazakh culture, there's a custom to give way to the elder. Let's ask about ages; whoever is older should ride first. When were you born?" The demon pondered for a moment and replied, "On the day I was born, my gaze fell upon the sky; I know exactly: The earth is merely a speck, just a single hill." At that moment, Aldar Kose suddenly burst into tears. The demon was taken aback: "What's wrong? Are you upset because it seems the first turn won't be yours?" it asked. Aldar Kose cried even harder. After a while, he put his head down and sobbed. "What happened? Tell me!" the demon pleaded. Then Aldar Kose, through his tears, said:
— "When you mentioned your birth time, it reminded me of my old sorrow: Exactly when you were born, there was a great celebration, and while racing on horseback, my youngest son passed away," and he began to wail again. The demon sympathized and tried to comfort him. "No, no, the first turn is yours. Get on my back; let's go," it said. As soon as it spoke, Aldar Kose jumped onto the demon's back. The demon then asked:
— "How long will you ride?" Aldar Kose replied:
– "I will sing a song. I will ride until my song finishes." He then started singing, "Alaylaylay-alay-lay." They traveled like this for a long time. The demon became utterly exhausted. At one point, it asked:
— "When will your alaylay finish?" Aldar Kose answered:
— "My alaylay hasn't finished yet. When it does, I still have 'ariaday' to sing," he replied. Aldar's alaylay never seemed to end. The demon became weak and faint. After that, it began to think of a way to get rid of Aldar. One night, while resting somewhere, it asked:
— "Aldar, what are you afraid of?" Aldar replied:
— "I'm afraid of kazy, karta, and kumys." While Aldar was sleeping, the demon went and found some kazy, karta, and kumys, bringing them back and placing them next to Aldar. It thought that when Aldar woke up and saw them, he would be scared and run away. In the morning, Aldar Kose prepared the food and drank the kumys, feeling satisfied. Then he jumped back onto the demon’s neck and continued singing his alaylay. Aldar Kose rode the demon for a whole year while singing his alaylay and ariaday.
