Plow, coal, and pea Fairy Tale
Once upon a time, there was an old and frail woman who had grown very old. She was said to be over eighty years old. One day, the woman went to the garden, gathered a plateful of peas, and decided to cook them. "I'll boil them and make a meal," she thought.
She started a fire in the stove and threw a handful of straw onto it to get it going. Then she began to put the peas into the pot.
This is where the incident began.
While she was putting the peas in the pot, one pea fell to the floor.
It bounced and landed beside the straw.
At that moment, a piece of coal flew down and landed there too.
The straw said, "Dear friends, where have you come from?"
"I came from the stove," replied the coal. "Otherwise, I would have burned up and scattered everywhere."
And the pea said, "Falling here has been my fortune too. Otherwise, like my other relatives, I would have boiled down to mush."
Then the straw said, "I’m glad I’m lying here instead of in the stove."
"What shall we do now?" asked the coal.
"I think we should go on an adventure," said the pea.
"Let’s do that, let’s do that!" said the coal and the straw.
So, the pea, the straw, and the coal set off on their journey. After traveling a long distance, they reached the edge of a small stream. The stream was so tiny that there was no bridge, making it difficult to cross. What should they do?
After thinking for a while, the straw suggested, "Here’s what we’ll do: I will lie across the stream, and you can walk over me as if you were crossing a bridge."
They agreed and followed the straw’s suggestion. The straw lay across the stream, and first, the coal ran across it. It moved just as if it were crossing a normal bridge. When it reached the middle, it perked up its ears and heard the water gurgling below. Startled, it stopped. "I’m scared of the water! I’m scared of the water!" it shouted. While it was shouting, the straw beneath it caught fire from the coal and broke in two, falling into the stream.
The coal jumped into the water after it, yelling, "I’m sinking, help me!" It screamed for a while before sinking to the bottom.
But the pea was clever and stayed on the shore.
Standing on the shore, it laughed at the coal and the straw.
It laughed and laughed until it almost burst from laughter.
Things were looking bleak for the coal and straw, but fortunately, a wandering tailor happened to be sitting by the stream.
The tailor quickly threaded his needle and sewed the two pieces of the pea back together.
Since the tailor didn’t have white thread, he used black thread to sew it. Ever since then, all peas have had a black seam around their middle.
